In this new series of work, Sarah has focused the collection around the Isle of Iona and it’s incredible landscapes. She uses oil, varnish and household emulsions to create the various surfaces and textures found by the sea and uses string and even sand to create a physicality of the environment. These include both east and west coast areas, like Gullane, North Berwick, Longniddry, Catterline (Aberdeenshire), Ardnamurchan and Ullapool. Her paintings are mainly executed in the studio from either photographs or sketches made while at the beach. Often the viewer is overwhelmed by their vastness – depth and distance are constant features in her work. Her work captures the various moods of both the sea and sky at different times of the year, and in varying weather conditions. Her canvases are often large in scale (up to 6 x 12 feet), colourful yet at the same time subtle. Sarah’s work focuses on the Scottish coastline, a passion for which she has had since her childhood family holidays, spent on the west coast and sailing around the Hebrides. Having graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a sell-out degree show in 1999, Sarah has become a well sought after young Scottish artist.
